Will Vinted report you to HMRC?

Answer three questions and get a straight answer in 30 seconds. Most people selling their own clothes owe nothing. Here's how to know for sure.

How the rules work, in plain English

30 sales or about £1,700

Reach 30 sales, or go over €2,000 (about £1,700), on one app in a calendar year, and that app must send your details and sales to HMRC by 31 January. They'll ask for your National Insurance number first.

How the Vinted reporting rule works

Reported isn't taxed

The report is information, not a bill. Selling clothes and things you've used yourself is generally not taxed, however many you sell.

When selling your own clothes is taxed

£1,000, then £3,000

Buying things to sell on counts as trading. Up to £1,000 of money in from trading is tax-free in the 2026/27 tax year (to 5 April 2027). From 6 April 2027 that rises to £3,000. It's money in, not profit. Go over it and you register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends.

The trading allowance explained

Rules last checked November 2026. See HMRC's reporting rules and the trading allowance on gov.uk, or read all our guides for sellers.

Questions people ask

Vinted asked for my National Insurance number. Do I owe tax?

Not automatically. Vinted has to collect it once you reach 30 sales or go over about £1,700 in a calendar year. If you only sell your own things, you usually owe nothing.

Why apps ask for your National Insurance number

Why doesn't Vinted's report match the tax year?

Vinted and the other apps report January to December. The UK tax year runs 6 April to 5 April. The 30 sales limit uses the calendar year, and the trading allowance uses the tax year. Wardsum works out both for you.

Calendar year and tax year compared

Is the 30 sales limit for all my apps together?

No. Each app counts on its own. You could make 29 sales on Vinted and 29 on eBay in the same year, and neither would report you.

How eBay, Depop and other apps report you

When does the £1,000 trading allowance change?

It is £1,000 for the 2026/27 tax year, which ends on 5 April 2027. From 6 April 2027 it rises to £3,000 a tax year. It only matters if you buy things to sell on.

The trading allowance explained

Is the trading allowance about money in or profit?

Money in. The allowance is about what buyers pay you for things you bought to sell on, before your costs. If that goes over the allowance in a tax year, register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends. Tax is then on your profit, or on your money in minus the allowance if that is lower.

What to do if you go over the trading allowance

Is this tax advice?

No. It's plain-English guidance based on HMRC's published rules. If you're unsure, check gov.uk or speak to an accountant.
